The Region I conference, hosted by the student section at UCCS, is occurring Feb 20th-21st. This year, there is something for everyone with tracks for SWE topics, Professional Development, Life Skills, and a uniquely Colorado track.
The Pikes Peak Section is in charge of two of the events during the conference and Carole is calling for volunteers to help set up and staff these events. The Hospitality Event is Friday evening, during pre-registration, from 6-9pm at AmeriSuites on Garden of the Gods. The Birthday Bash is on Saturday, from 5-6pm at UCCS. Please call Carole at 719-531-4767 to volunteer.
More information about the conference is at http://www.swe-pps.org/regionconf.
The Rocky Mountain Section of SWE is looking for volunteers for its 2nd Annual Girls Exploring Science, Engineering, and Technology (GESET) Event on Feb 23rd from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Adams Mark Hotel in Denver.
Imagine: 800 girls and young women exploring an idea, an idea that you may have been curious about in your own youth... excitement is generated by the career that you hold... you give a girl the support to follow her dreams of being an astronaut, a bioengineer, a graphic artist... you are a role model, just by being you...
As a mentor/guide for GESET event, all you need to do is act as a chaperone for a group of 10 middle school girls during the event. You will usher them from session to session and talk with them along the way, help and interact with them during the two hands-on workshops, and eat lunch with them. There is someone else presenting the workshops, so all you are doing is helping the girls. Talk with them about what you do in your job, why you chose your career field, etc. No preparation is required prior to the event. You get breakfast and lunch for helping out. There is a short required training session at 8:00 a.m. on the morning of the event. You are responsible for transportation and parking. Hopefully your employer will give you the time off for community service supporting National Engineers Week and you won't have to take it as vacation time. Dress will be business casual. You can wear a shirt that has your employer's name/logo, or you can wear a shirt that has the name/logo of an engineering society or other minority organization.
If you would be willing to help, please e-mail GESETvolunteers@msn.com with you name, address, phone and e-mail. You can also send questions about volunteering to that address.

Women on the Web: A career development Webcast, "Advance Your Career from the Cubicle to the Corporate Office," will take place February 18 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, EST, and is sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers. Deb Grubbe, P.E., Dupont Corporate Director, SWE member, and Engineers Week activist, will discuss career advancement for women in engineering. The session - not limited to SWE members - is open to professional women engineers. To register, go to www.swe.org/pdwebcast218.
Engineers Week from Austin to Alexandria (Egypt That Is): In Santa Rosa, California, Agilent engineers will reach out to 40-50 girls from 6th grade up to college for "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day." Engineers will share inspiring stories and provide a fun hands-on competition where the students will be part of project teams and present their results. Students will receive certificates of completion. Contact nicole_pope@agilent.com. In Colorado Springs, Agilent engineers will host 50 young women from local school districts. They will build an "Agilent After School" simple electronic circuit and be able to take their finished experiments home to share with family and friends. Contact teresa_mueller @ agilent.com
