On Sat. March 12th, the Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair was held at UCCS and the Pikes Peak section of SWE once again participated by rewarding young women for their efforts at the Fair. SWE recognized female scientists at both the senior high and middle school levels. Award winners were Diana Qiu of Palmer High School and Sarah Thomsen of The Classical Academy.
The winners each received a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble bookstore.
The Science Fair remains a crucial outlet for young ladies to demonstrate their science capabilities and garner confidence and recognition. Overall, 53% of the participants were female - of which High School was 51% female and the Middle School divisions had a record 55% female participation.
A special thanks to the six women engineers who volunteered to be the judges: Diane Howe, Vanessa Livie, Judy Long, Connie King, Sondra Martin and Brenda Wolfe. This group of women engineers also selected the recipients of the American Association of University Women - Colorado Springs Branch (AAUW-CSB) Special Awards and some Discovery Channel awards. All of the students who received these special awards had excellent exhibits and they gave interesting and informative presentations!
