Career Guidance Op at Liberty and Air Academy

We've been asked to provide speakers who majored in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Chemical Engineering for Career Day events scheduled on Wednesday, October 6th at Liberty High School from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and at Air Academy High School from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The counselors and teachers organizing these Career Days are specifically interested in having women engineers speak to inspire their female students to consider careers in engineering.

If you would like to speak at one or both of these October 6th Career Day events, please contact Connie at (719) 633-4421.

5 Ways Women Make Better Leaders

MSN.com recently published an article describing how women make better leaders. In the 1980's and early 1990's, women manager's in positions of leadership were often encouraged to behave more like men. This advise did not work for many people. In more recent studies, researchers have confirmed the conventional wisdom that women lead better in the areas of: 1) Team-building; 2) Empowering; 3) Communication; 4) Consensus-building; and 5) Almost everything else.

Do's And Don'ts for Making a Good Impression at your First Job

Ok, you know you have them. Those stories about how you shined on a particular project. Or, those stories about the time you crashed and burned and would never do that again.

Well, time to share it! SWE-PPS is hosting a joint meeting with UCCS's SWE section and is pulling together a panel to discuss the topic "Do's and Don'ts for Making a Good Impression at Your First Job". It will be held on Tue, Nov 9th at 7pm.

Did you drink too much at the holiday party and ended up wearing your CEO's tie around your head on the dance floor? Did you streamline a cumbersome process you saw with your novice's eyes, saving the company time and money? These are the kinds of stories to share with the students and others at the November meeting.

If you have those "if I only knew then what I know now" stories, and want to volunteer, contact Carole at 531-4767.

  Note from the Editor

The Fall Season is underway, not just for the Broncos, but for SWE-PPS, as well. The calendar has been set for many of our monthly meetings. You can see it at www.swe-pps.org/swe-schedule.html.

On October 21, clear your calendar for the Joint Engineering Societies' Social, co-hosted by SWE-PPS, being held at The Warehouse Restuarant. This event is intended for engineers to network and to hear what is the latest within the Societies and the profession. Food and brewery tours will be provided.

One of my lifetime goals is to visit 50 countries and every state in the U.S. I've been to 43 states and will be soon adding a 44th - Wisconsin. I will be in Milwaukee to attend the 2004 Society of Women Engineers National Conference this month. Watch this space for reports on the Conference.
