Dear SWE-PPS:
I hope you'll make in time in your summer fun to join us at our annual awards banquet. Come meet the amazing high school women that are receiving scholarships from SWE-PPS as well as thanking the corporations that sponsor our scholarships. This is also a time to recognize our members who have helped SWE-PPS excel this year. Please spare a few hours to celebrate our accomplishments and look forward to next year.

Here are some statistics on this year's applicants for SWE PPS Scholarships . We had 17 outstanding applicants from southern Colorado, including girls in Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Montrose, Palisades, Cortez, and many more small town communities. Many girls are inspired to be engineers because they want to build things to improve their communities or help people, many have been to science or engineering camps, or they are inspired by programs from NASA to reach for the stars.
This year we had 3 valedictorians, 1 salutatorian, 1 girl with a perfect 5.0 GPA, 3 girls who scored a perfect 35 on the ACT Math or Science college entrance exam, only 2 did not have 4.0 or higher GPAs and those two had 3.9 and 3.75. They have excellent reference letters written by their proud science and math teachers, counselors and principals. Their class sizes rank from 12 to 450. They are all in the top of their classes. Some represent minorities including a number of Hispanic descent and a Native American. Most of them are taking AP or Honors courses, and some are already taking college classes. Most of them are going to Colorado universities, but some are going to prestigious engineering schools including Stanford and Florida Institute of Technology.
We were able to award 3 $1000 scholarships and 3 $500 scholarships to our top six applicants. The six winners will be announced at our July Awards Luncheon. The three $1000 scholarships are sponsored by Agilent Technologies, Intel Corporation, and LSI Corporation. The three $500 scholarships were sponsored by JR Engineering, Northrop Grumman, and Westmoreland Coal. Please let these companies and their employees know that we appreciate their support for this important SWE program.
The 2006 SWE Scholarship judges who made the tough choices from these outstanding candidates are Lauren Johnson, Connie King, Jenna Lopez, Anne Shaffer, and Wanda Williams. Wanda Williams co-chaired the committee and very successfully contacted many potential sponsors resulting in our final 6 sponsors. Good job and thank you to the 2006 judges!
