National Engineers Week Wrap-Up by Angela Howard

Engineers Week 2007 was a great time to share our love of engineering with female students in Colorado Springs. SWE members made a difference with students at Colorado College and the Air Force Academy this year!

Judy Long and I met for a coffeehouse discussion with four female students from Colorado College to share our experiences with engineering and SWE. A couple of their male classmates were even brave enough to attend! The students who attended had great questions about internships, resumes, and how to pursue a career in engineering. These young women have aspirations as diverse as being a Marine pilot to being an environmental engineer. Many will be pursuing a masters degree in engineering after getting their undergraduate degree in physics or chemistry and I'm sure they would appreciate meeting engineers who have followed similar career paths. Students from Colorado College will be attending the region i conference at Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, March 3, so you may be able to meet them there.

Beth Blakney, Karyn Fishburn and I also celebrated Engineers Week by meeting with close to a dozen female Air Force Academy cadets and four of their female professors for a similar panel discussion. Many of these students were focused on pursuing aeronautical engineering, but there were representatives from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science as well. Obviously they enjoyed learning from Beth and Karyn's experiences in the Air Force and their current positions working for defense contractors. The cadets also enthusiastically discussed the career guidance activities they are pursuing through Cool Science and other groups for their fledgling SWE Collegiate Interest Group.

Pikes Peak section is fortunate to have so many female students pursuing SWE and engineering nearby. I hope all of you get the chance to meet these intelligent and dynamic students—what a way to renew your enthusiasm for SWE and engineering!

National Engineers Week Wrap-Up, Part 2 by Connie King

During the 2007 National Engineers Week, eighteen engineers volunteered to speak about their careers to students in Irving Middle School 's Project Lead The Way Gateway to Technology pre-engineering classes. Gary Hilty, the teacher who organized this event, said the students were very excited to meet real engineers and enjoyed their presentations! We would like to thank the following engineers for encouraging these middle school students to take math and science classes and consider engineering as a career: Frederick Brooks, Randy Dipner, Jeff Davis, Jeff Pettorino, Ronald Bass, Jesse Collette, Steve DeLory, Scott Mace, Ted Driver, Ethan Ford, Tina Cox, Harry Direen, Jim Densmore, Kathy Kasley, Civa Mauze, LaKaya Belcher, Bill Sneed, and Emily Skalsky. Thanks also go to engineers from Lockheed Martin, Agilent and CH2MHill who have volunteered to make additional presentations to the pre-engineering class students at Irving Middle School .

Call For Science Fair Judges

Once again the SWE Pikes Peak section will be sponsoring special awards at the Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair . If you enjoy working with students to help them develop their interest and skills in math and science, please consider judging at the 2007 Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair.
Judging will be Saturday, March 10, 2007, 9:00-Noon at the Phil Winslow Expo Center.

If you are interested in judging, please contact Brenda Wolfe, 337-7817 or send an e-mail, brenda <dot>wolfe <at> metso <dot>com.

Girls Exploring Science, Engineering, and Technology (GESET) 2007

Imagine

1300+ girls exploring an idea, an idea that you may have been curious about in your own youth…excitement is generated by the career that you hold…you give a girl support to follow her dreams of being an astronaut, a bioengineer, a forensic scientist…you are a role model, just by being you…

You can support the 6th and 7th grade girls who will be participating in GESET 2007 on April 10th at the Colorado Convention Center. This is the 4th year of GESET and it has grown in popularity to include 1200 participants last year. This year, over 50 workshops are planned. Volunteers are needed.
