The SWE Annual Convention was last month in Nashville and was a rousing success. Over 5000 people attended over the course of the four day conference. Next year the convention is in Baltimore November 6 – 8. If you have never been to a SWE National Convention, I encourage you to attend next year. I find it very empowering to be surrounded by so many female peers who are so enthusiastic.
Also occurring at the National Convention was the Council of Representatives (COR) meeting. The COR is a body consisting of one or more representatives from each section plus collegiate representatives. They approve by-laws changes as well as other strategic planning issues. Our COR rep is Angela Howard but as she was taking her PE exam that weekend, I attended the COR meeting in her place. Many of the issues were, in the big scheme of things, minor so I won't bore you with them. The one big item was a proposed restructure of the COR itself. It is currently such a large body (155 members) that it is difficult to do any “real work.” Several proposals were discussed and the committee is going back to evaluate and make recommendations back to the COR.
Finally, if you enjoy working with young engineers, I encourage you to get involved with MentorNet ( www.mentornet.org ). It is on online mentoring program where professionals are matched with college students to provide support, advice and encouragement. It is a great way to give back without leaving your desk.

SWE-PPS member, Carole Passmore, was one of the women awarded Woman of Influence, 2007, by the Colorado
Springs Business Journal. CSBJ identifies women who have made a difference in Colorado Springs and who are
leaders in their field and representative role models.
Five of Carole's friends from SWE-PPS and ten of Carole's colleagues from Agilent attended the October 18th Colorado Springs Business Journal's Women of Influence reception to celebrate Carole's receipt of this award.
Please see the article about Carole in the CS Business Journal at
http://www.csbj.com/story.cfm?ID=15217. Congratulations Carole!
National Engineers Week Event for Students SWE PPS is partnering with Agilent Technologies, Inc. and Cool Science for a National Engineers Week event for home school students. The event will be held on 12 February 2008 from 9 AM to 12:30 PM. Students in 2nd - 8th grade will come to Agilent to see a Cool Science "Magic Show", participate in hands-on activities with Agilent After School Kits (a science or engineering experiment in a box), and socialize at a pizza lunch. PPS members are needed to help host this event. A flyer with sign up information will be on the PPS website soon. Contact Carole Passmore 531-7986 or carole.passmore@swe.org for early information.
Each year about 250 people across Wyoming, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, and part of Illinois get together for the Region i Conference. This year the University of Colorado Boulder is proud to host this event! This conference is a great opportunity for both SWE and non-SWE members to get together and celebrate the idea of being an engineer! This year, we have over twenty speakers signed up to help us grow our leadership, professional development, technological, health, and fitness skills. But overall, these speakers will help us have fun!
Registration for the conference is now OPEN! To register or for more information, go to http://www.cuswe.camp7.org/ .
